Not All Dark Chocolate Bars are Created Equal

Last night while commenting on Dr. Marc’s chocolate blog, I realized that not all dark chocolate bars were created equal.

To my surprise, the cheaper varieties actually contain fillers, ie. soy lecithin and vanillin. Of the ones without filler, they are beyond reach for most.

Dark chocolate is a hot topic today, and many health professionals will agree there are health benefits. Dark chocolate has a high ORAC value and gives off dopamine (the”feeling good” hormone). Because we don’t know how the study was done (whether PURE chocolate was used or not, if any of chocolate used contain cocoa butter or cocoa nibs, etc.), we don’t know if the added filler can interfere with the(se) health benefit(s). This brings skepticism and raises the idea that this maybe another marketing ploy from the candy industry.

In other words, I’m wondering if this is a ploy from the candy industry to make us eat more. By nature, chocolate is high in calories.

But here are two chocolate bars without any filler:

1) Theo - 3 oz. - $6.00

2) Askinoise - almost 3 oz. - $7.50
