Food as Medicine

Here’s a three hour documentary worth watching about a guy diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and who turned his life around by eating nutrient dense foods. His story is compelling because he fought with the oncologists not to be another “guinea pig” on drugs. He goes into depth about how doctors “cooked” the numbers and make it sound like a drug is successful when it’s not. There is some truth to this documentary because I know a farmer whose mother was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and got cured by eating properly.

Please note that I’m not saying that the doctors were wrong. There are some good doctors out there. Doctors come from different schooling, and different schools teach them different things. They themselves do not agree among each other. When it comes to your own health, keep in mind that you can’t believe everything you hear or read. When the media flashes this is not safe to eat, question why. Was the study done on animals or on humans? How big was the study, etc? For example, humans can safely eat chocolate, but chocolate is poisonous to dogs. Just because a study works on rats does not mean it will work on humans.

Healthy Dining

I came across this dining site. Its “healthy” team includes an award winning nutritionist, a board member from the cancer society, etc.

When I typed in my zip for “healthy” restaurants, I got Round Table, Burger King, Mc Donalds, etc. I know there are better restaurants than those listed in my area.

See if you get any “healthy” restaurants in your area.

Update on the Almond Law

Sometime this week, I will be blogging about my recent almond trip. Just to give you an update:

The almond law is going into effect because a California grower made the mistake of laying manure at the time of harvest. Almonds are dropped to the ground at the time of harvest and are then sent to a processing plant to dehull. When manure is on some of the shells, it becomes a breathing ground for salmonella. You can read more about the incident here.

In case you are wondering, the outer velvety shell becomes cattle fed.

I’m not sure what this is but it does sound like another OTC pill. Every day the media bombards us with new diet plans, pills, books, solutions, and hope. It’s too stressful keep up with what’s going on. I don’t.

The best way to lose weight reasonably is to eat well and to exercise (walk, bike, or run).. Your body is like a “car”. If you feed your body with “low octane”, you may puddle here and there. But if you feed your body with “high octane”, you will run smoothly. You need good energy in order to sustain the type of exercise you will do, so treat yourself right. Don’t feed your body with junk!

Start out by walking 1/2 hour until you build endurance. It will take time, so despair. In my 20’s, I used to walk as much as 8 hours. That’s extreme but that how much of an endurance I built.

To keep yourself motivated, bring a mp3 player packed with songs or educational materials. Never walk right after you finish eating and always be vigilant of your surroundings.

In the meantime, ditch those Costco coupons or sell them on eBay like two other people…..That’s another story……

How to Read Nutrition Labels

I used to be the only one in the store reading nutrition labels. One day I either got bored or got too curious that I decided to spend the day at the supermarket going through the aisles reading labels. I found out there was not much I could buy. That was 7 years ago.

I’m not suggesting that you do the same, but I am suggesting that you watch the following free video on how to read nutrition labels. Jeff Novick, a former Kraft Food’s employee, does an excellent job depicting some of the common misconceptions people have about health foods, carbs, fats, sodium, no calories, and sugar. This video will shock and change some of your eating habits.
