PepsiCo to make low-cal Gatorade drink

PepsiCo Inc., the nation’s second biggest soft drink company, is adding a new low-calorie version of Gatorade and a bottled water with caffeine and vitamins to its lineup of non-carbonated drinks.

The company said Friday it will introduce G2, a low-calorie sports drink from Gatorade, and Propel Invigorating Water, a vitamin-enhanced caffeinated water.

G2, PepsiCo said, will have 25 calories per eight-ounce serving and is the first new Gatorade product since the original drink was introduced in 1967. The original lemon-lime Gatorade has 50 calories per eight-ounce serving.

PepsiCo said it will distribute the drinks beginning later this year to small-format customers, including convenience stores, gas stations and retail outlets.

The company also said it is reformulating its SoBe Life Water with sucrose, antioxidants and vitamins. The new formulation will have 35 calories per serving, which is 30 percent fewer than the previous formulation.

PepsiCo is also reformulating its Aquafina Alive water with a new sweetener blend that has fewer calories.

PepsiCo, which also owns the Frito-Lay snacks business, is second to The Coca-Cola Co. in the soft drink market.
