More Healthy Tidbits - On Digestion, Protein, etc.

1) Your body cannot digest food that has been brown or have gone through what is known as the Maillard reaction, ie. toast.

2) Milk produced from grass fed cows is more beneficial than milk produced from corn fed cows because of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), a natural form of transfat which bodybuilders use to convert to lean body muscles.

3) Processed sugar causes oxidative stress known as Advanced Glycosylation Endproducts (AGE’s), which damages your proteins; thus make you look older. If you want to retain your youthfulness, make getting rid of processed sugar your top New Year’s resolution.

4) We often hear that high carb diets are really bad for us, but the media does not always provide a clear explanation. When they talk about high carbs, they are referring to the processed carbs, not the good carbs that is found in fruits and muesli. The reason that processed carbs are bad for you is that your body is constantly undergoing protein synthesis, even when you sleep. Your body is always in need of energy. Processed carbs turns into LDL (”the lousy cholesterol”).

5) Phytoesterols resembles to the chemical structure of animal cholesterol; however, it is not the same type of cholesterol found in animal products. Most cholesterol in your body is made by the liver, not from the food we consume.

6) All membranes require cholesterol. HDL (”the good cholesterol”) have transporting vessels that can take the LDL back to the liver to dispose. LDL are the rebels. Once they are out, they do not return home.

7) The maximum capacity of your stomach is ~1 liter.

8) Nitrogen is an important chemical that plays a role in protein synthesis. The more protein you consume, the more excess nitrogen you will have. Because high levels of nitrogen is toxic to the body, this has to be taken out in the form of urea (urine).

9) Kale has about 230% more calcium than milk; however, the calcium in kale is not easily absorbable.

10) Menstruating women loose iron and copper in every period. If you have a compulsive craving for ice, also known as pagophagia, have your doctor check you out for iron deficiency.

11) The best way to lose weight is not to “starve” yourself. Your body is constantly using energy even when you are asleep. When you have no food (no carbs either) left to convert into energy, your body enters into the ketosis stage, in which your body converts stored body fat into fuel energy. While this may seem like a great idea to burn off stored fat, it is not because ketosis slows down your metabolism drastically. Sooner or later, you are going to run out of stored body fat and will need to eat again, only this time you are going to eat MORE and will have a harder time losing weight the next time around. (Refer to Dr. Marc’s ketosis explanation on his other blog.)

12) B12 is only found in the lumen of the animal. There is no B12 in muscle. For humans, B12 is absorbed through by fermentation in the large intestine.

13) Most bacteria in our bodies require iron to survive. There is no iron in milk, which is one reason milk is good for babies.

14) By the age of 50, over 80% of the people in this age group are showing signs of disc degeneration. A lack of exercise can “rob” your bone of calcium. Perhaps, this maybe the reason for disc degeneration because people tend to exercise less as they get older.

15) Flu shots contain mercury, which makes me leery about the its health benefits.

16) There are no calories in fiber because fiber is indigestible in the human body. Too much fiber, however, can block some mineral absorption, such as zinc, from entering the blood stream.

Secrets to a More Toned Body

Ever since I flattened my tummy, a different side of me emerged and that gave me the encouragement to exercise on a regular basis. The more I exercise, the more I realize the feminine I have become. It’s a great metamorphic change, and one that still shocks me even today. I have a hard time believing that at my age, I can still have a nice body.

To tone my body, I use a combination of gym equipment:

1) 30 minutes on the trendmill
2) 5 minutes on the row machine
3) 5 minutes on the stationary bike
4) 5 minutes on the equipment where your feet go up and down and your arms push and pull.

To flatten my abs, I do a combination of push ups, pull ups, side push ups, and abs related exercises.

On the weekends, I walk for 45 minutes around a neighboring canyon.

Though this may sound excessive, it’s not, especially when I consume on average 2000 to 2500 calories per day. In the past, I have tried eating below 2000 calories but that does not work too well, not when I like to experiment in the kitchen.

My body is still undergoing changes. I’m not sure what I will look like in the next 6 months but that is the quest I take. If I lose one more inch off my waist by Dec 2008, I will be happy.

What I Learned About Exercising and About Weight Loss

1) Walking has always been my form of exercising, but walking does not tone the body. It’s the variety of gym equipment that does.

2) As you get older, it’s important to exercise on a regular basis because the loss of muscle mass gravitates the body unpleasantly. If you want to keep your chest and buns in shape, you need to exercise regularly.

3) A firm mattress is a great exercising pad for those who have not done any exercise in a while. You are less likely to injure yourself.

4) To lose weight, you need to stray away from processed foods. The only way I know is to cook gourmet.

5) The Europeans have very small refrigerators because they do not like to eat left overs. They are high carb people who eat alot of bread and pasta. Bread is baked several times a day, and pasta is made fresh daily. They even use alot of butter and olive oil in their cuisine, yet the majority do not get fat. Perhaps, the reason maybe they like to eat fresh, not processed.

6) Your metabolism is the slowest during your sleeping hours. It’s important NOT to skip breakfast if you want to maintain a healthy metabolism.

Concerning Your Health - How Clean are Those Hotel Room Glasses?

The next time you check in a hotel, be sure to wash your glasses thoroughly or better yet, bring your own. According to Fox News, Ritz-Carlton, Renaissance, Sheraton, Holiday Inn, Embassy Suites, and the likes, they all clean their glasses the “dirty” way. Instead of taking them to the dishwasher for cleaning, the housekeeper cleans them by:

1) Spraying them with glass cleaner and drying them with SOILED towels

2) Or by rinsing the dirty glasses with just plain water, without the usage of any detergent.

Either way, it is a health concern as Disease Control Expert Roy Acosta points out that one can contract any of the following pathogens: E-coli, salmonella, herpes, scab infections, hepatitis, etc.
