Doctors Stunned That Lowering Glucose Increase Death Risk
“It’s confusing and disturbing that this happened,” said Dr. James Dove, president of the American College of Cardiology. “For 50 years, we’ve talked about getting blood sugar very low. Everything in the literature would suggest this is the right thing to do,” he added….Dr. Irl Hirsch, a diabetes researcher at the University of Washington, said the study’s results would be hard to explain to some patients who have spent years and made an enormous effort, through diet and medication, getting and keeping their blood sugar down. They will not want to relax their vigilance, he said.”
“The study’s investigators emphasized that patients should still consult with their doctors before considering changing their medications.”
Before anyone draw any conclusions, consult with your doctor first. I have a hutch that this study was done by a specific drug company that failed to gain FDA approval in the final clinical stage. Because this study was an astronomical financial loss (10k patients), this company decided to make a big stint. Study investigators are doctors typically contracted by either the pharmaceutical or biotech firms to recruit “suitable” patients to try out a specific drug in a clinical trial (”trial drugs”).
HMMMM. I don’t know about this study. I do know that before I lost 120 pounds I was on oral med. The meds. would make me bottom out often and with little warning. After I lost most of the weight I got off the med. as soon as possible. I have a deal with my doctor. If I stay on my diet and exercise and test my blood BID, he will let me use the sliding scale with insulin at above 180. I test 2 hours after a meal and have only had to use insulin 5 times in 8 months. I can keep very tight control in this manner. I do know that 20 years ago some questions were raised about the heart and oral med. Diabetes does take good control to avoid damage to kidneys, heart, eyes, etc. My mother was legally blind, one leg amputated, several strokes and heart attacks. She died at the age of 60. If only she could have tested her blood at home. i am so lucky. Thanks for the info, but I have my doubts we heard the whole truth on this study, right? Marge Oh, mom was on insulin, not oral med.
