Depo Provera Can Lead to Weight GAIN

“It may come as no surprise to many who have tried it, but researchers here confirm that women who use the injectable contraceptive depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (Depo-Provera) can expect to gain weight. “
“Over the course of the study, the researchers found, women using the injectable contraceptive were 2.13 times more likely to become obese than those using nonhormonal methods. Those on oral contraception were not at increased risk, compared with those using nonhormonal methods.”
“The findings are worrisome,” Dr. Berenson said. “However, more research is needed to determine if (injected contraception) use directly contributes to obesity-related conditions and puts patients’ overall health at risk.”

Once I went in and asked about it. The nurse said most women gain from 20-40 pounds or even more. I said “NO THANK YOU”!

yea unfortunatley I had to find out for myself by using it.
I was told that 10 to 20 percent of women will gain some weight. They didn’t say how much!!
I gained over 40 pounds thinking it was ME! My doctor didn’t even suggest that it could’ve been the depo. a**holes!
So now I am paying for it. >.
Depo-Provera also can leech calcium out of the bone. According to Pfizer’s web site,
“Women who use Depo-Provera Contraceptive Injection may lose significant bone mineral density. Bone loss is greater with increasing duration of use and may not be completely reversible.”

I went on the shot after my second one was born. It says the average woman will gain 5 lbs a year, no big deal, I can keep that away…. try 30 lbs in 2 months! and then the third month I had to literaly starve myself, just to maintain the weight I had gained, while it worked out of my system… I only used it once, but it lasts 3 months. Took me 7 years to lose it, and I never did lose it completely…. working on finishing what I statrted 17 years ago!
